Welcome to Lyons Township Little League Baseball
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and a brief outline for the season.
How is your league set up?
There are four divisions in Lyons Township: T-Ball, C-Ball, B-Ball and A-Ball.
T-Ball is open to all kids born on or before April 30, 2002. The season starts with children hitting exclusively off a tee. When ready, an adult will pitch slowly and give each child three swings. This occurs usually within two weeks of the first game. If the batter misses, they will go back on the tee. Everyone hits and everyone plays all positions, if capable. The very basics will be taught at this level and each coach will have been instructed on the basics. T-Ball consists mostly of 6 and 7 year olds.
C-Ball is child pitch, until four balls are thrown. At that point an adult will come in and pitch overhand from the mound and finish the at bat. Children can strike out. Again, almost all positions should be attempted. This is not a competitive level and due care will be taken to ensure skills are taught by the coaches. C-Ball consists mostly of 8 and 9 year olds.
B-Ball is all child pitch. Skills at specific positions will be enhanced and win-loss records will be kept. Children will play as many positions as possible, but always keeping the child's safety in mind, first and foremost. Stealing is permitted. There is a tournament at the end of the season between the Lyons Township B teams and the Pleasantdale B-teams. The winner of the tournament plays the first place winner team from Western Springs on the 4th of July. B-Ball consists mostly of 10 and 11 year olds, and a few 9 year olds.
A-Ball is our highest level. It is competitive baseball. The intricacies of baseball are taught in order to prepare kids for the next level (Babe Ruth). It will be assumed most players have the necessary skills and generally understand the game. Still having fun and making it a good experience will be emphasized. A-Ball consists mostly of 11 and 12 year olds.
What level should my child be at?
For returning players, their coaches from last year will have recommended them for the same level or advancement. New 6 and 7 year old players generally belong in T-Ball. Any players ages 8 and up (age as of
April 30, 2007), who did not play in Lyons Township Little League last year, should attend the evaluation session/tryout at
location to be determined.
Returning players may also be re-evaluated upon request of their parents/guardians. Please contact
Bob Wagner, Player Agent, if your child is a returning player and you would like him/her to be evaluated. She will give you the time slot for your child's age group. There will be only one tryout date.
The Board of Directors decided it is better to understand and state what is expected of parents and kids instead of having people guess. The code has been adopted by the league and will be enforced. A copy of the form is attached so you know what you signed.
When will I know what team my child is on?
The coaches will select A-Ball teams via a draft in mid-February. B-Ball teams will be drafted in late February, C-Ball teams will be drafted in early March. T-Ball teams will be formed by the League, after the C-Ball draft, in mid March. Players can expect to be notified by their coaches before March 15th.
Who runs the league?
The league is run by volunteers, and they are the keys to our success. Everyone who signed up also volunteered and is expected to help out when called upon. Please give a portion of your time. It's what makes a league great.
When does the season start and how long does it last?
A-Ball and B-Ball will start the middle of April and continue through the end of June. The
C-Ball and T-Ball seasons run from May through June. Tournaments and All Star games will extend the season for some A-Ball, B-Ball and C-Ball players (ages 8-12), normally through July.
We hope this answered some of your questions. The members of the Board of Directors are very approachable and would very much encourage comments, and always will consider your concerns. The goal of the league, and each manager and coach, will always be to ensure your child wants to play the next year. We will do whatever we can to see that this happens. See you for spring training!
